Hi I'm slightly confused normal for me says hubby! When I was at the hospital this week for BRAGGS an a check up my Rheumy nurse said to only take 1 folic acid tablet a week and not the 1 every day apart from MTX day. has anyone else had this. Also There is a change to the way they look at CRP if its in single figures they are not worried but I know by the time mine even reach 8 my fingers and wrists start geting stiff, like now I can hardly type. Why is the way they treat people with RA so different from county to county? Best wishes Tricia aka a Travelgirl not travelling because the RA has laid me off work for at least 3 months says my GP. life is too important to be taken seriously Oscar Wilde

Hi Tricia-I've always been told to take FA once a week on the day after my MTX. Yet my sister-who lives over the road takes it differently! I've asked for a professional to come on and discuss this with us many times but no luck. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Hi Tricia
There is obviously an awful lot of confusion about this!
I have been told by the consultant to take one a week, the day before my methotrexate!!
It would be good if we had some clarification about this.

Hi Tricia,
We have had this debate many times on here!
I was originally told to take 6 tabs a week ,missing the mtx day, but when I joined this forum 3 years ago I realised that we were all told to take different doses. I asked the rheumy nurse I had then about it and he said " we tell you to take 6 in case you forget, you can just take one if you want!" So I did my own research on it and the most consistent piece of advice I found was to leave 48 hours either side of the mtx. So I now take 4 a week, mtx on a Monday and folic acid on Wed, Thurs, Friday and Saturday. Seems to work for me and my GP approved it.

Hi there, I used to take 1 each day except the MTX day, now I have been told to take 1 the day AFTER MTX. I asked why and was told the new research was 1 was enough. I wish they would make up there minds and get us all the same, it would make life so much easier. Lorna

When I started mtx I was told to take 10mg 4 days after taking mtx. The mtx made me feel so rough I phoned the helpline at the hospital and advised to increase it to 5mg everyday except mxt day. When I switched to injections last week I asked about folic acid and was advised to carry on with 5mg six times a week for a few weeks until I was sure I was tolerating it better and then cut it back down to 10mg four days afterwards.

Hi There What a mystery this is. When I went down to 1 F A 48 hours after MTX I started getting mouth ulcers again and my hair started falling out again, phoned my rheumy and she has said to upp them back to 5 a week starting 48 hours after MTX . I don't want to get the wigs out again. Maybe NRAS will add the question to the surveys they are doing at the moment. Thank you for your input. Best wishes Tricia life is too important to be taken seriously Oscar Wilde

I started taking MTX end of May last year. I take MTX on a Friday and take 1 folic acid tablet Monday. I'm sure that the nurse told me it was the new guidelines. She also said that if I did have any side effects then they would look at increasing it, thankfully I have been OK up to now.

5mg Folic acid everyday except mtx day, was taking 1 a day for 2 days before mtx but due to side effects was told to up it. Be nice to get somebody to come on here and explain it.
Dawn.

Hi Paula-C Thank you that link ws really useful, it seems like the wholemedical world don't seem to have a common dosage table they use. I hadn't realised that FA countermeasures the effectiveness of the MTX I saw it just reducing the side effects like nasuea and tiredness. Does that mean the more FA dosage you take the least the MTX will have as an effect on your body. best wishes to all Trica aka I'm not travelling life is too important to be taken seriously Oscar Wilde
